My external optical drive is not showing up on my Mac. Does this mean it isn't recognized and won't work? 

Look in the drive manager on your system to see if the drive is showing up there.

 

If it is showing up in the device manager but not on the desktop try placing a disc into the drive and see if the icon for the drive shows up.

 

It seems that on the Mac platform the drive is invisible until a disc is placed into it.

 

Your drive may be working properly all along.

 

If it does not show up in the device manager try un-installing, power down your system, power your system up again and then reinstall the drive. Most of them are plug-and play and should be automatically recognized and installed.
