Why Doesn’t My Drive Recognize My Discs?
Why Doesn't My Drive Recognize The Rated Speed Of My Discs?

You may encounter a problem where your drive is not recognizing the optical disc or the disc is recognized at a slower speed than it is rated for.

This may even happen on a brand new drive where one would expect that the media should work.

Most drive-disc issues can be resolved by updating the firmware of the drive to improve compatibility. This will improve the odds that the drive will recognize the disc.

Once the disc is recognized, understanding how the drive and disc interact is important. The drive capability will determine the speed of the recording and playback (read) of the disc. For example, if a 6X Blu-ray disc is placed into a drive that is capable of 4X BDR writing and 2X BDR reading then that is the fastest the disc will be written or read.

Max speed is not dependent on the disc but on the drive or reorder/player.

New drives are not automatically tuned to all media in the market. They are in fact NOT tuned to all media when first released for sale.

The drive tuning process for drive-disc compatibility is a lengthy process. The drive manufacturer will select only a small number of the discs that have been submitted for compatibility testing (by the disc manufacturers) and will tune the drive to those discs then release to the market. (Usually the first discs submitted are the first discs tested.) This process gets the drive in the market quickly.

After the drive is released to the market the drive manufacturer continues to tune the drive to media in their test queue and will update the compatibility to other discs in firmware updates. Remember to continually check for firmware updates to have the best compatibility with the discs in the market.
