Write Protect Message from a Flash Drive in Windows
Reference Number: AA-00229 Views: 10500 Last Updated: 2014-11-26 09:34

Why does Windows return a "Write Protect" messsage when trying to use a USB flash drive?

A write protect error message may possibly show on a flash drive connected to a Windows operating system when trying to add additional data to the drive.  This message is an indication that the drive may have been damaged or worn out.  To protect data stored on the device, additional write operations are prohibited.

If the write protect message displays on a flash drive without a physical switch, data on the device should be backed up elsewhere and the drive replaced.  There are no tools to recover the write capability of the drive.  If the drive is under warranty, contact Technical Support for assistance.
