What type of materials are used on TDK Life On Record CD and DVD?
Optical Discs are made mostly of polycarbonate. The raw material for this comes in tiny little pellets which are melted down and then molded in an injection molding machine to form the shape of a disc and the grooves that the data is recorded in.
A layer of photosensitive dye is added, followed by a layer of reflective metal.
There are 4 basic dye types available for optical media. Then there are additives used in the formulation to improve performance.
Generally, TDK Life On Record media uses an Azo or Organic dye base for DVD products and Phthalocyanine for CDR products.
Reflector materials are silver alloys.
In the case of CDR, a lacquer layer is added to seal the disc. In the case of DVD, an adhesive and then another layer of polycarbonate is added to form the final disc.
